BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 22. Turkmenistan and Russia intend to launch a regular container service on the eastern route of the North-South International Transport Corridor in the near future, Trend reports via “Business Turkmenistan” news agency.

This issue was discussed during the negotiations held in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) between the head of JSC "Russian Railways" Oleg Belozerov and Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, Director General of the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Mammethan Chakiyev and Chairman of the Turkmendemiryollary Agency (Turkmen Railways) Azat Atamuradov.

The parties discussed the development of transportation along the eastern route of the North-South International Transport Corridor, which runs along the railways of Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran, and then along the sea shoulder to the countries of the Persian Gulf and South Asia.

Furthermore, the organization of transportation of metallurgical products and a number of other goods through Turkmenistan and Iran to the UAE, Türkiye and other countries was discussed.

According to preliminary estimates, by 2025, the total volume of export traffic from Russia along the eastern route of the North-South International Transport Corridor may amount to more than 5 million tons per year.
