BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 10. Turkmenistan aims to develop the agro-industrial complex within the framework of projects of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia at FAO, Viorel Gutu told Trend.

He stressed that on August 11, 2019, Turkmenistan signed an agreement on a project to expand the scope of integrated natural resources management in drought-prone and salt-affected agricultural production landscapes in the Central Asian countries and Türkiye.

"In close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection of Turkmenistan, project activities in Turkmenistan are being implemented in three typical agro-pastoral regions. These are the pilot regions of Nohur (mountainous), Karakum (desert) and the Gurbansoltan eje district (irrigated area)," Gutu said.

It was noted that the project activities are focused on the application of various adaptation and mitigation measures through demonstrations of drought mitigation and salinity management technologies and training aimed at increasing skills, knowledge and the preparedness of partners to cope with the adverse effects of increasing climate change processes and hazards.

"In accordance with the priority areas identified in the Country Programming Framework and beyond, FAO will maximize its efforts to provide technical support to Turkmenistan through the realization of Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) projects in the domains of fisheries, animal health and pasture management, land tenure and climate change," he added.

A regional project was launched in 2018 to scale up integrated natural resources management (INRM) in drought-prone and salt-affected agricultural production landscapes in the Central Asian countries and Türkiye (CACILM II). Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project aims to scale up integrated landscape management approaches and INRM practices that will help stabilize soil salinization, reduce erosion, improve water capture and retention, increase the sequestration of carbon and reduce loss of agrobiodiversity, thereby reducing desertification trends in terms of extent and severity. On 11 August 2019, Turkmenistan signed an agreement for the CACILM II project. In close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection of Turkmenistan, project activities in Turkmenistan are being implemented in three typical agro-pastoral regions:

1) Pilot region Nohur (mountainous)

2) Pilot region Karakum (desert)

3) Pilot region Gurbansoltan eje district (irrigated area)

Project activities are focused on the application of various adaptation and mitigation measures through demonstrations of drought mitigation and salinity management technologies and training aimed at increasing skills, knowledge and the preparedness of partners to cope with the adverse effects of increasing climate change processes and hazards.

Moreover, in accordance with the priority areas identified in the CPF and beyond, FAO will maximize its efforts to provide technical support to Turkmenistan through the realization of Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) projects in the domains of fisheries, animal health and pasture management, land tenure and climate change.
