Uzbek President Islam Karimov received Kyrgyz Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov Dec. 28, the Presidential Press Service reported.

The sides discussed bilateral ties and other topics of mutual interest.

"I believe your visit to Tashkent to hold a joint intergovernmental commission meeting is a significant event in our bilateral relations," the president said. "We are neighbors and that explains everything."

"Constructively optimizing Uzbek-Kyrgyz relations is a priority of our bilateral cooperation," he added, stressing the importance of cooperation in trade, sciences and culture.

In his turn, Usenov called cooperation with Uzbekistan a priority for Kyrgyzstan.

The joint intergovernmental commission meeting reviewed bilateral trade and economic ties and defined targets for further developing cooperation.

According to official statistics, trade turnover between the two countries increased by 44 percent to $265 million in 2008 compared to 2007 and to about $140 million in January-June 2009.
