A 5000 soum banknote will be introduced in Uzbekistan today, the Uzbek Central Bank said last week.

'The Uzbek Central Bank will issue new 5000 soum banknotes from July 1, 2013', a bank statement said.

The new banknote and security features on both its sides were described in details.

'The new banknotes must be accepted at face value by all business entities and the public without any restrictions', a statement said.

Until now, a 1000 soum banknote introduced into circulation in 2001, was the highest value one in Uzbekistan.

The national currency namely the soum was issued on July 1, 1994. Then one, three, five, 10, 50 and 100 soum banknotes and metal coins of the value one, three, five, 10, 20 and 50 tiyin (one soum - 100 tiyin) were issued during that period.

The 200 soum banknotes and one, five and 10 soum metal coins have been in circulation since March 1, 1997.

The Central Bank issued a 500 soum banknote in June 2000, a 1000 soum banknote and five, 10 and 50 soum metal coins in September 2001, a 100 soum coin in 2004 and a 500 soum coin in 2011. Today it is the highest value coin of the Republic.

Currently, there are no one, three, five, 10, 50 soum banknotes, one, three, five, 10, 20 and 50 tiyin coins and one, five and 10 soums in circulation. The Central Bank issued a 50 soum coin in September 2001.

The official exchange rate is 2.093.10 soums /$ 1.
