Uzbekistan, Tajikistan to establish hydropower plants in two stages

The construction of the hydropower plants at the Zeravshan river in Tajikistan will be held in two stages, Alisher Sultanov, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy said, Trend reports citing Uzbek media.

The agreement for the construction of two power plants was signed by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon during the recent visit of the Mirziyoyev to Tajikistan.

In his words, the Yeowon power plant with a capacity of 140 MW will be constructed within the first stage of the project implementation. The plant will generate 800 million kWh of electricity. The project investments volume is $282 million.

The construction of Fandaryo power plant construction is planned within the second stage of the project implementation. The plant’s capacity will be 135 MW and will generate 600 million kWh. It is expected to cost $270 million.

Sultanov noted that the construction of the plant’s will be carried out by the Tajik-Uzbek joint venture which is yet to be established. The funding for the project will be attached via loans and grants from the international financial organizations, as well as via own funds of the joint venture.

The minister added that new jobs will be created during the construction and exploitation of the power plants.

The electricity generated at the future plants will also be supplied to both Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
