Uzbekistan ready to build its first nuclear power plant

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 2

Trend:

Uzbekistan is preparing to build its first nuclear power plant, Trend reports on July 2 with reference to the Uzbek media.

The site for its construction has already been chosen.

The experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that the work is being carried out in compliance with all safety requirements and non-proliferation principles.

Uzbekistan, a big global supplier of uranium, expects nuclear power to ensure a low-carbon energy source, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase generating capacity.

The country signed an intergovernmental agreement with the Russian Federation in 2017 to build two VVER-1200 pressurized water reactors, which are to be commissioned by 2030.

Uzbekistan began to search for the site for its first nuclear power plant in 2019.

A group of IAEA experts paid a 12-day visit to Uzbekistan in June.

The inspectors conducted a comprehensive assessment of the infrastructure development process for the nuclear power program and concluded that everything was going in accordance with the plan and all regulatory requirements were met.

The delegation members stated that Uzbekistan has made significant progress in developing the nuclear power plant project and has taken steps to improve the regulatory framework and strengthen the potential of the regulator.

The members of the delegation added that the country's nuclear power program has strong state support.

The delegation made recommendations and proposals aimed at helping Uzbekistan prepare for the construction of its first nuclear power plant.

“Uzbekistan has achieved significant progress in the development of its nuclear energy infrastructure,” head of the delegation, head of the IAEA's Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section Milko Kovachev said.

The delegation consisted of one expert from Brazil, one expert from Bulgaria and eight staff members of the IAEA. The IAEA was created in 1957 to assist the countries in the peaceful use of atomic energy.
