BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 5. The State Committee for Ecology of Uzbekistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) signed an agreement worth $5.99 million, Trend reports via the Uzbek committee.
As part of the agreement, the "Program for Impact on Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration in Uzbekistan" will be implemented.
The main goal of the joint project is to help restore degraded ecosystems, introduce innovative methods of growing crops and protect biodiversity.
Activities implemented within the framework of the joint program:
- conservation and restoration of biodiversity and habitats of endangered species;
- raising awareness among the population in the field of ecology, as well as attracting the necessary resources for the conservation of biodiversity
- developing land use practices and improving crop resilience to drought, heat, soil erosion and salinity.
In addition, it is planned to save globally important ecosystems from the effects of climate change.
It is noted that the proposed funds are allocated for restoring 0.5 million hectares of degraded land and lost forests by 2030.
In addition, it is planned to increase the productivity of irrigated lands affected by desertification and drought and to solve the problems associated with the drying up of the Aral Sea.
