TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, October 6. Uzbekistan plans to raise electricity fees for large electricity consumers starting from November 1 of 2023, Trend reports.
The tariff increase is said to apply to only 2 percent of the population, who use over 1,000 kWh of electricity per month.
As per data by Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy, among Uzbekistan's 7.5 million subscribers, only around 146,000 use over 1,000 kWh, approximately 10,000 subscribers utilize more than 5,000 kWh, and more than 4,000 subscribers consume more than 10,000 kWh of energy each month.
The coefficients will amount to the following:
from 1,000 to 5,000 kWh – 590 soums (4.8 cents)
from 5,000 to 10,000 kWh – 885 soums (7.3 cents)
over 10,000 kWh – 1180 soums (9.7 cents)
The cost of 1 kWh of electricity for the population remains unchanged at 295 soums (2.4 cents).
The introduction of increasing coefficients was explained by the need to strengthen the culture of savings among the population and eliminate elements of the shadow economy.
Earlier this year, Uzbekistan approved increase of energy tariffs for businesses countrywide from October 1, 2023. The changes only affected legal entities, as the tariffs for population remained unchanged.
Uzbekistan has produced 52.2 billion kWh of electricity from January through August 2023.
As per data provided by Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy, the recorded number is 5.8 percent more than in the same period of 2022 (49.3 billion kWh). Over 13.06 billion kWh of electricity was supplied to the population in the reporting period, which is 18.4 percent more compared to the same period in 2022 (11.04 billion kWh).
In 2022, total volume of electricity produced in the country amounted to 74.3 billion, which is 3 billion kWh or 4.2 percent more than in the same period of 2021.
