An Iranian diplomat at embassy in Norway has resigned in protest against Tehran's harsh treatment of anti-government protesters, news reports said Wednesday.

Mohammed Reza Heydari told broacaster NRK that he had left the embassy and was considering contacting Norwegian authorities, DPA reported.

"My conscience did not allow me to stay on," he said.

Heydari had served three years in Oslo. His wife and two sons were also reported to be in the Norwegian capital.

An Iranian embassy spokesman contacted by NRK declined to comment.
