Pakistani police have impounded a vehicle belonging to the US consulate in Karachi for having a false license plate in Gwadar, near the Iranian border.

District police officers stopped three Americans who were travelling from Turbat to Gwadar in a Land Cruiser. They were entering the limits of Gwadar, Pakistan's Nation cited police sources as saying, Press TV reported.

During the search, an official plate belonging to the US consulate in Karachi was recovered from the vehicle. The vehicle and its passengers were taken into custody by the police.

Official sources in Quetta have confirmed that the three Americans were employees of the US consulate in Karachi.

The sources said the three detainees were travelling in the Gwadar area without prior notice or any security provisions, adding that they would be released after investigation.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) News reported that Pakistani police had released the three Americans.

IRIB News said US consulate staff had told Pakistanis officials of the southwestern Province of Balochistan that the three detainees had diplomatic immunity.
