Eight dissidents have been arrested in Iran, the official news agency IRNA reported Monday.

It quoted an unnamed source as saying that eight members of the banned Freedom Movement liberal party were arrested last week in the central city of Isfahan, DPA reported.

Party chief Ebrahim Yazdi and his deputy Hashem Sabaqian were among those arrested, the agency said.

Yazdi, a former foreign minister, and Sabaqian were transferred to the capital Tehran while the other six remained in custody in Isfahan, the source told IRNA.

Yazdi and his deputy had reportedly attended a mourning ceremony on Friday in Isfahan and then held a secret session with provincial party members.

Members of the Freedom Movement have reportedly resumed their political activities in the provinces, although Yazdi had given a written commitment that his party would no longer be active.

Yazdi, 79, was foreign minister in 1979 in the first post-revolution cabinet of Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan.

He resigned after radical students occupied the United States embassy in Tehran and after his call to end the occupation was rejected by the new ruling clergy establishment in Iran.

Following the disputed presidential election last year and fraud charges against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government, several former reformist officials have been arrested.

Most have received long jail sentences after being charged with plans to topple the Islamic establishment.
