Iran nuclear plant 'exceptionally' safe

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi says the country's first nuclear power plant complies with high safety standards, Press TV reported.

"The Bushehr power plant is one of the most exceptional plants in terms of safety," he told reporters on Saturday.

He said that there was no doubt over the safety of the plant as necessary measures have been adopted "to provide maximum safety" and the plant was also monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Iran on Tuesday started injecting fuel into the core of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the southern port city of Bushehr.

Salehi said that injection of fuel to the core was a milestone since it was considered the most sensitive phase in the launch of the plant.

He said the plant's output was expected to join the national grid within three months.

The power plant will become operational once all 163 fuel rods are injected to its core. According to Iranian officials, the reactor will begin generating electricity in early 2011.

The building of the nuclear power plant was completed with the help of Russia and the reactor will operate under the supervision of the IAEA.
