Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has congratulated Dilma Rousseff for her victory in Brazil's presidential election, Press TV reported.

"I am confident that Brazil will go ahead with its progress and development with full speed during your presidential term," Ahmadinejad said in his message to his new Brazilian counterpart, IRNA reported on Monday.

"The Islamic Republic believes that the establishment of regional and international justice, security and stability will be possible through observing rights of nations and respecting international regulations while refraining from using force and dual standards in resolving crises," he added.

The Iranian chief executive said friendly cooperation between Iran and Brazil has brought great achievements in mutual, regional and international fields during the office of outgoing Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

He expressed hope that friendly relations between Iran and Brazil would be further developed under Rousseff.

Rousseff was elected as Brazil's first female president to succeed da Silva.

She garnered 56 percent of the 95 percent of the ballots counted and managed to beat her rival, former Sao Paulo state governor Jose Serra.

The 62-year-old Rousseff, who was jailed in the 1970s for guerrilla activities, will take over as the country's president on January 1, 2011.

Brazil's media have nicknamed Rousseff the "Iron Lady," comparing her personality to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
