Iran reiterates push for Africa ties

Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the Islamic Republic will back efforts by African nations to salvage themselves from arrogant powers' oppression, Press TV reported.

Larijani made the remark in a Tuesday meeting with head of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's (DRC) Senate Jean Claude Mokeni in the Iranian capital, Tehran, Fars news agency reported.

The Iranian official cited Congolese resistance against the expansionist policies of foreign powers as one of the reasons for close ties between Iran and Congo.

"Iran's Majlis will support any measures towards the expansion of bilateral economic and political cooperation," he added.

Larijani pointed out that the Islamic Republic would throw its weight behind African countries to assist them in ridding themselves of the domination of arrogant powers.

He also touched upon Africa's important status in Iran's foreign policy, saying consolidation of ties between private sectors of the two countries would significantly improve the level of Iran-Congo economic transactions and would contribute to the development and progress of Congo.

Mokeni, for his part, said that he discovered a significant potential among the Iranian nation for resistance against foreign pressure in his visit to Iran.

He added that the Congolese delegation would gain from the experience of Iranian lawmakers on various parliamentary issues during the visit.

The Congolese official also expressed gratitude for the Islamic Republic's assistance and support for his country.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congolese delegation held a meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.
