Diplomatic relations between Iran and the new Egyptian government have already been formally shaped, Senior Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi said, Press TV reported with reference to Fars News Agency.
"In my view, relations between Iran and Egypt, which are now underpinned by a new political and revolutionary structure and exemplified by the recent visit of a 50-member Egyptian delegation to Tehran, have been practically established and taken an official and political form," Boroujerdi said.
The lawmaker, who is the head of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, was referring to a visit by an Egyptian delegation comprising of senior socio-cultural, religious and academic figures, who visited Iran in late May.
The move came years after Tehran severed ties with Cairo in protest at Egypt's granting asylum to Iran's deposed monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Cairo's pro-Israeli stance under the rule of former President Hosni Mubarak.
In late January, Egyptians staged weeks of massive protests in major cities, particularly in Cairo, which led to the ouster of Mubarak from power on February 11 - coincident with the 32nd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979.
Boroujerdi pointed to Mubarak's ouster, the Egyptians' determination to pursue their demands, the prosecution of Mubarak and his affiliates, and the revolutionaries' decision to hold general and presidential elections as further proof that "the prevailing political conditions in Egypt differ radically from those of the past."
During the rule of Mubarak, attempts had been made several times to normalize relations between Iran and Egypt but they had failed.
Egypt currently chairs the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi has been elected the new head of the Arab League.
