Iran is likely to participate in Istanbul and Bonn conferences on Afghanistan security, Mehr News Agency quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry's Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast as saying on Tuesday.

About 90 participants from different countries will attend the Istanbul meeting on Afghanistan security.

Earlier, during the UN session in New York Afghan FM Zalmai Rasoul invited his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi to partake in the Istanbul meeting.

The Istanbul Conference slated for November 2, 2011 focuses on issues relating to Afghan security, recruitment, training and equipment of Afghan security forces, as well as the reconciliation process. The conference will also focus on regional economic cooperation among Asian countries and has no relation to the 2nd Bonn Conference.

The Bonn Conference, which is planned to be held in December, will convene more than 1,000 delegates from 90 countries, international organizations and the United Nations to discuss the transfer of responsibility for security to the Afghan government by 2014, international commitment to Afghanistan following this handover, and the political process vis-а-vis national reconciliation and the integration of former Taliban fighters.
