Iran official calls Bahrain’s claims baseless, fabricated

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian has dismissed allegations by Bahrain that it has identified a terror cell with connection to Iran, Mehr News reported.

Bahrain's public prosecutor on Sunday alleged the cell planned attacks against high profile sites, such as the Saudi Embassy in Manama and a causeway linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, according to the Associated Press.

The claims are "baseless and fabricated," Abdollahian told the Arabic language al-Alam channel late on Sunday.

Inspired by pro-democracy uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, the Bahraini people have also been seeking rights. However, the al-Khalifa family has suppressed pro-democracy voices and so far 35 protestors have been killed in the tiny Arab kingdom.

The Bahraini kingdom has claimed that protests are being provoked by Iran.

"We reject such deceptive allegations," Abdollahian said. "We believe it is a necessity to deal peacefully and democratically with legitimate demands voiced over the past months by the Bahraini people."
