Tehran's General Prosecutor has indicted the CEO of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) for publication of misinformation aimed at provoking public opinion against the Iranian officials, Press TV reported.

Ali-Akbar Javanfekr, who is also Iran's presidential media advisor, was charged with dissemination of lies, spreading rumors and inciting public opinion against judicial and political officials.

Over the past six months, Tehran's Prosecutor has filed 15 complaints against Javanfekr.

The CEO of IRNA is appointed by the Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance and upon receiving approval from the president. Last week a number of media outlets reported that Javanfekr has been taken into custody by Iran's security forces.

The reports were later dismissed by IRNA, and Iran's Judiciary Spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei confirmed that Javanfekr had not been detained.
