Amirkabir University of Technology plans to design and build a space rocket over the next 28 months to send living organs into the Low Earth Orbit (LEO), the head of the dynamic space and control department at the university stated.

Mansour Kabkanian told the ISNA news agency that short-term installation, returning to atmosphere and receiving vital signals from the earth surface are among the objectives of the project.

A Low Earth orbit is generally defined between 160km-2,000km above the Earth's surface.

Iran launched its first satellite, dubbed as Kavoshgar-1, in 2007.

Last year, Iran announced it had put a rocket carrying a mouse, turtle and some worms into space.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced plans for the monkey flight in February, with the mammal dispatched inside a capsule with life-support for a 20-minute flight about 75 miles above the earth surface.

Ahmadinejad has said Iran plans to put a man in space by 2017.
