The Velayat 90 wargames are designed to prepare naval troops against any possible chemical warfare by using the latest domestically-produced equipment, Iranian Navy's Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi said, Press TV reported.

Admiral Mousavi also said the ten-day maneuvers have helped the navy to keep a greater part of the Gulf of Aden under its radar for dispatching rescue missions or launching surface to sea missiles.

"Iran's Navy is equipped with new defense systems including long range surface-to-sea and surface-to-air missiles that have been set up along the Iranian shores or on ships, and we plan to test them during the 10-day drill," said Mousavi.

Iran's Navy launched the massive naval exercises on December 24, which cover an area stretching from the east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Aden.

The sixth day of the maneuvers wrapped up on Thursday, with electronic warfare simulation, during which the navy used surveillance equipment and radar systems to patrol the international waters.

Earlier on Thursday, the Iranian navy identified and recorded footage and images of a US aircraft carrier in the area where Iran is currently holding its naval military exercises.

On Monday, Iran's Navy also repelled a foreign helicopter that had approached the vicinity of the country's naval drills. The helicopter was made to leave the region following a stern warning of the Iranian forces.

Over the past years, Iran has made important breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

The country has repeatedly made clear that its military might is merely based on the nation's defense doctrine of deterrence and poses no threat to other countries.
