The first utility unit relating to the South Pars gas field's phases 15 and 16 was inaugurated on Thursday.

The unit is a part of the facility to produce steam and electricity, the Mehr news agency reported. The development plan of the phases 15 and 16 of the South Pars gas field is 80 per cent complete.

Some $700 million has so far been invested in these phases and all the offshore installations will be commissioned by next summer, the development manager said.

In total, 230 kilometres of pipeline has been laid and two jackets, each weighing 2500 tons, have been installed in the two phases, Abbas Haj Hosseini told the Pana news agency.

The South Pars gas field is shared by Iran and Qatar. The Iranian share, which is divided into 29 phases, has about 14 trillion cubic metres of gas, or about eight per cent of the total world reserves, and more than 18 billion barrels of liquefied natural gas resources.
