As it moves toward implementing the second phase of eliminating subsidies for energy carriers, Iran's government won't be paying "affluent" citizens" any additional compensation, Mehr news agency reports.

Currently every Iranian receives 455,000 rials, about $37, every month as a compensation for the subsidy cut launched late in 2010.

Last week, the Iranian government transferred 280,000 rials, about $23, to Iranians' accounts for the second phase of the program without approval from the Majlis (parliament).

While all Iranians are eligible for the cash payments from the first phase, those who have high incomes won't be getting any money in the second phase. Iran's targeted subsidies program will probably be implemented in three phases, said Behrooz Moradi, the head of the Targeted Subsidies Organisation.

When it goes into effect, the second phase of Iran's subsidies reform plan will bring in higher prices for petrol, diesel, kerosene, water, electricity and gas.
