Iranian Vice-President for International Affairs Ali Saeed-Lou said that the country would host the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit late August.

"Initial steps to host the meeting are being taken. Some letters of invitations have been sent for NAM members to join the summit and other letters are being sent. Iranian Foreign Ministry is pursuing the issue," he told ISNA.

He said some international observers would join the summit as well.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states considering themselves not aligned formally with or against any major power bloc. The movement includes 120 members and 17 observer countries.

The organization was founded in Belgrade in 1961. The purpose of the organization is said to be national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries" in their "struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics.

The countries of the Non-Aligned Movement represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations' members and contain 55% of the world population.
