Iran’s FM departs Tehran for New Delhi

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi left Tehran for New Delhi Thursday morning on a two-day visit, IRNA reported.

Salehi is arriving as a special envoy of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to hand over an invitation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to attend the Tehran NAM Summit in August this year, said Ministry of External Affairs in a release issued here Wednesday evening.

During his visit, Salehi will call on Prime Minister and meet the External Affairs Minister, S. M. Krishna and National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, the release said.

Ahmadinejad had spoken to Singh on phone a fortnight ago saying that he is sending Salehi as his special envoy to invite him to attend the NAM Summit.

The 16th NAM Summit will be held in Tehran from August 26-31.

Iran is the forth largest supplier of crude oil to India after Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. India announced this month that it would import 2 million tons oil less than previous year from Iran in 2012.

India imported 17.5 million tons crude oil from Iran in 2011.
