Kofi Annan's plan on Syria was very good, it was working, as he carried his mission without any guidance and help, so his plan will remain on the table, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said, IRNA reported.
Former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is quitting as international peace envoy for Syria, frustrated by "finger-pointing" at the United Nations while the armed rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad becomes increasingly bloody. Annan's mission ends by the end of August.
As battles raged on Thursday in Syria's second city, Aleppo, between rebel fighters and government forces using war planes and artillery, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced in New York that Annan had said he would go at the end of the month.
Annan's mission, centered on an April ceasefire that never took hold, has looked irrelevant as fighting has intensified in Damascus, Aleppo and elsewhere.
Annan blamed "finger-pointing and name-calling" at the U.N. Security Council for his decision to quit but suggested his successor may have better luck, according to Reuters.
Ali Akbar Salehi answered on the U.S. State Department's reports that Russia and China are responsible for Annan's mission failure.
He underscored that Russia and China are not to blame for Annan's words that United Nations Security Council does not have unity.
"The Americans are creating conflicts in the region, they prevented Annan from going further with his plan," Salehi said.
He added that Annan clearly explained the reasons of his resignation, at times not giving away details of his departure.
"Some Arab and Western countries criticized Annan's plan and prevented him from successfully implementing it in the region," Salehi said.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria has exceeded 17,000 people. About 230,000 people became refugees.
