The United States and Israel are supporting the terrorist groups in Syria, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said at a weekly press-conference in Tehran, Press TV reported live.

Mehmanparast noted that the U.S. plays a distractive role in the region, trying to create tensions and destabilize peace and stability among the Islamic states.

"The U.S. has already shown itself by slaughtering innocents in Afghanistan, Libya, and elsewhere. Now they have the same plan for Syria," Mehmanparast said.

The Syrian conflict has claimed up to 20,000 lives since March 2011, according to estimates by various opposition groups and the UN. The UN refugee agency has registered almost 150,000 refugees in four countries bordering Syria.

Most recently, after regaining control of Damascus, the Syrian army has continued a large-scale offensive to force rebels out of the northern city of Aleppo, on the border with Turkey.

The government troops on Monday stormed the western neighborhood of Aleppo in a battle that could decide the future of the armed uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The spokesman expressed hope that the Syria will get over the violence, and adapt, before peace and stability come into the country.

Regarding the claims of Israeli officials about possible attacks on Iran's nuclear objects, Mehmanparast said Iran does not consider such statements serious.

"The zionist regime has its own domestic problems, so to show effectiveness, they are making such baseless, unfolded claims," Mehmanparast said.

"I do not think there are officials of this regime that want to do somethig as illogical as this."

Speaking about Tehran hosting the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit, Mehmanparast said some countries stand against such meetings.

"They cannot change minds of those member countries inside NAM," Mehmanparast said. "NAM member countries are able to make their decisions independently."

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states considering themselves not aligned formally with or against any major power bloc. As of 2012, the movement had 120 members and 21 observer countries.
