Commander : NAM summit in Iran should hoist anti-terrorism flag

A senior commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) says the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Iran should herald the onset of a fresh global campaign against terrorism, Press TV reported.

In a Saturday statement, Deputy Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Yadollah Javani pointed to the developments in the post-9/11 era in which the US and the West formed the so-called anti-terrorism alliance and noted that this is while the US has now turned into the "axis of global terrorism" and this is manifest in Washington's meddling in Iraq and Syria.

"Therefore, under the guidance of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement can stage an explicit campaign against terrorism and hoist the flag of the fight against terrorism," he added.

Political observers say the US favors the presence of al-Qaeda militants and other extremists in Syria to help the country's armed commands overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Javani argued that the NAM summit in Iran will defuse the potential threats against the Islamic Republic, as the event will take place amid the West's physiological warfare against Tehran and the all-out attempts by the enemies to exert pressure against the country.

The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held in the Iranian capital on August 26-31.
