The number of students in Iran has increased from 170,000 students before the Iranian revolution to some 4,350 000 million, IRNA reported.

The director of Iranian Ministry of Science's Development and Planning committee, Abolfazl Hasani said that such rate growth of student population in the country is a great honor for Iran.

He added that the student population growth has been increasing alongside with overall country population, which increased from 30 million to some 70 million.

Hasani noted that the last Masters degree exams in Iran saw some 1 million people participating, with over 90,000 people being accepted.

Speaking of PhD exams in the country, Hasani said that some 180,000 people took the exams, with 11,000 people passing the tests.

Hasani said that earlier it has been proposed to establish special institutes of higher education, that would teach male and female students separately, however this idea was later omitted.

He noted that there has been some criticism of gender discrimination in a number of academic disciplines, which was the reason for the separate institutions not being established.
