EU Diplomatic Service: Group of six proposes Iran meeting in February

The EU Foreign Policy Service, in an effort to reach out to Iran on behalf of the "Group of six" of international mediators, sent a proposal to Tehran on conducting negotiations in full format in February, spokesman for EU chief diplomat Catherine Ashton, Michael Mann told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

According to Mann, Brussels expects Iranian authorities to agree on a meeting date and place. Initially, the EU Foreign Service invited Iran to hold talks on January 28-29 in Istanbul, but Tehran disagreed.

"Now, we have proposed a new date in February and await a response from the Iranians," Mann said.

In 2012, representatives of the "Group of six" (Russia, USA, China, France, Britain and Germany) and Iran held three rounds of talks - Istanbul (April 14), Baghdad (May 23-24) and Moscow (18-19 June). All of these meetings ended without any breakthroughs. Before then, talks of "six" plus Iran had not been conducted for over a year. The United States, other Western countries and Israel suspect Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the guise of peaceful nuclear program. Tehran says its nuclear program is aimed solely at meeting the country's electricity needs.
