The Guardian Council is the only body responsible for monitoring the election process, therefore it will prevent other bodies of meddling in the election affairs, the Guardian Council's spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaee said on Friday.

Averagely 3 to 5 watchdogs have been appointed to monitor the election process at each polling station, the Mehr News Agency quoted Kadkhodaee as saying.

They will directly submit their reports to the Electoral Commission, he added.

Kadkhodaee further said the Guardian Council will closely monitor the process of voting and will take immediate actions to investigate any suspected violation of law.

He also said that the Council will appreciate public reports about any possible violation of law.

Kadkhodaee also urged the candidates not to predict the winner before the final results are announced.

Previously the interior minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar had also made the same request from the candidates and the media.

People are casting their ballots in Iran's presidential elections, and city-and-village council elections. Over fifty million Iranians are eligible to vote, with more than one and a half million first-time voters.

Around three-hundred centers in other countries are also receiving Iranian expatriates for them to cast their ballots.

Leader of Iran's Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khanemei cast his ballot as soon as the polls opened.

The voters will elect the successor of the current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the elections for the third term according to the country's constitutional laws.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election. The Guardian Council has vetted the candidates for qualifications.

According to Najjar, the vote counting will start immediately after polls close.

The results will be gradually announced via the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, he said.

If no candidate receives 50 percent of the vote in the first round, a runoff will be held on June 21.
