Statistical data indicates that mortality among men has increased in Iran, director of Iran's Census Bureau Ali Akbar Mahzun said on Thursday, ISNA reported.

According to him, over the first six months of the current year (In Iran, the year begins on March 21), some 180,525 people died in Iran, some 102,229 out of which were men, and 78,296 were women.

According Mahzun, some 139,441 people out of the deceased, were residents of cities, and 41,084 people were rural residents.

On average, 971 people die per day, 1.9 per cent more than compared to the same period of the last year, he said.

For the first half-year the birth rate increased by 2.5 percent, Mahzun added.

"In the first six months of the year, there were 734,060 births, 377,618 of which were boys, and 356,442 - girls," he added.

On average, 3,947 babies are born a day in the country, Mahzun said.
