Iran will investigate causes of shooting incident on border with Pakistan within the shortest possible time, ISNA quoted Deputy Interior Minister Ali Abdollahi as saying.

"The investigation of the issue will take time, so at this point we cannot comment on anything," he said.

Friday night shooting occurred between Iranian border guards and a group of armed people in the direction of Saravan city located in the south-east of the Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan. The group was trying to enter the country from Pakistan.

Some 17 Iranian border guards were killed, five more were injured and 4 more were taken as hostages, Iranian news agency Fars reported on Saturday citing an anonymous source.

According to preliminary information, the incident was committed by terrorist groups operating against the Iranian regime, the agency said.

Meanwhile, member of the Iranian parliament's National Security Committee, Mohammad Hassan Asafari said that the committee will discuss the issue this week.
