Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has sent a message to Pope Francis, congratulating him regarding Christmas and New Year holidays, IRNA news agency reported on Dec. 25.

In his message Rouhani underlined that anniversary of Jesus Christ's birth is an opportunity for boosting mutual respect and dialogue among the religions.

He also appreciated Pope Francis`s efforts on dialogue and cooperation with Muslim and Jewish leaders.

In a message to the Iranian and world Christians on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Jesus Christ, he called on all people around the globe to cooperate to pave the way for a better world.

Rouhani expressed hope that 2014 to be the year of freedom, prosperity, tolerance, convergence and peace for all. He congratulated the whole humanity on the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ who was seeking for a free world full of peace.

Any one in the world taking steps in line with eradication of discrimination, violence and extremism and tries to administer justice and peace has moved according to the divine values, the President said in his message.

Referring to the ratification of Iran's proposal for a world free of extremism and violence by a strong majority in the United Nations, the President voiced Iran's readiness for taking practical steps towards promotion of peace and peaceful coexistence in the world.

Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed cultural holiday, celebrated generally on December 25 by billions of people around the world.
