Pier Ferdinando Casini, president of the Italian Inter-Parliamentary Union met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran today, ISNA reported.
Casini is in Tehran heading a group of Italian MPs and politicians to discuss different regional and international issues.
During the meeting, Zarif said the region is in need of public-based democratic systems. He referred to the Islamic Republic of Iran as a successful model of democracy.
He said that extremism threatens all the regional countries as the fire of radicalism has engulfed Syria.
Casini, for his part said that influential and powerful Iran can play a key role in the region.
