Delegations from Canada, Ireland are expected to visit Iran in the near future, head of Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Aladin Boroujerdi said, IRNA reported on Jan. 7.

He added that the delegation, led by Chairman of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pat Breen, will arrive at the Iranian capital on January 11.

During his stay in Tehran, Breen is expected to meet Boroujerdi as well as a number of Iranian political and parliamentary figures.

The delegation from Ireland is expected to discuss with Iranian officials grounds for the enhancement of cooperation between Dublin and Tehran.

Hossein Sheikholeslam, advisor to Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on international affairs, said that the trip comes at the invitation of Boroujerdi, and will seek to further boost parliamentary and political relations between the two countries.

In a meeting with Speaker of the upper house of the Irish Parliament Patrick Paddy Burke on the sidelines of the 129th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva on October 8, 2013, Larijani stressed the need for the development of Iran-Ireland economic ties.

Larijani also said Majlis is interested in the expansion of cooperation with the Irish Parliament, calling for stronger ties between the two countries in energy, engineering, electronics and economic sectors.

It should be noted that a British parliamentary delegation headed by former foreign secretary Jack Straw arrived in Tehran on Jan. 7, for a 3-day visit, to discuss issues of mutual interest with senior Iranian officials.

On 8 October 2012, the Britain Foreign Secretary announced that the UK and Iran had agreed to appoint non-resident Chargés d'Affaires as an important step towards improving the bilateral relationship. Britain closed its embassy in Tehran in 2011 after a rally against British new imposed sanctions on Iran escalated into violence and Iranian protesters scaled the walls, ransacked offices and burned buildings.

Also a delegation from Italy has visited Iran on Jan. 3, led by the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Italian Senate Lamberto Dini.
