An earthquake measuring 5.6 degrees on open-ended Richter scale jolted Mourmouri town in Ilam province Sunday morning, IRNA reported.

According to a report by Seismography Center of Tehran Universityˈs Geophysics Institute, the tremor occurred at 00:35 hours local time (2005 hours GMT on Saturday night).

There was no immediate report on possible casualties or damage caused by the quake.

Since Sunday Iranˈs western provinces of Kermanshah and Ilam have witnessed more than 500 earthquakes.

An earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, hit Ilam province Monday. It occurred at the depth of around 10 kilometers (6 miles) in an area 36 kilometers southeast of Abdanan.

The earthquake damaged roads and water, electricity and telecommunication facilities.
