By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

The Iranian private sector will establish five compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in Iraq.

National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company official Mansour Riyahi said many of the neighboring countries of Iran have announced their readiness to buy CNG from the country, Iran's Fars news agency reported on September 2.

An agreement with the Iraqi Oil Ministry will be finalized soon, based on which the Iranian private sector will establish five CNG stations in Iraq, he added.

Riyahi said on August 4 that over 2,220 CNG stations are operating nationwide.

Some 20 million cubic meters of gas is consumed on average per day by CNG stations, he added.

Iran's deputy oil minister Abbas Kazemi has said the expansion of CNG stations can prevent from excessive gasoline consumption.

"Iran has even experienced importing 35 million liters of gasoline per day in the past," he said, adding that CNG consumption has lowered the country's need to import gasoline considerably.
