Trend:

Iranian contractors and exporters of engineering and technical services could have more share in the Iraq market and reconstruction of Mosul that expected to be a $5 billion project, said the Head of the Association of Iranian Exporters of Technical and Engineering Services, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Iranian companies are proper contractors for Iraq due to close proximity, lower cost of services, and security, Bahman Salehi indicated.

"Iraqi government's policy created a problem for Iranian exporters, and we hope the new Iranian administration could have good cooperation in policymaking, management and security and economic issues for the private sector," he said.

"Iranian contractors are anticipating to receive their money from Iraq for their work but Iraq has not paid the money yet, by creating good ties between private and public sectors, the government could compensate the cost," Salehi noted.

"Complexities and problems for Iran's export of technical services and presence of contractors are different in Afghanistan compared to the Iraqi market. Working in Afghanistan was easier than in Iraq despite problems and Iranian contractors had predictable frameworks in Afghanistan however the market was smaller and at the moment due to the recent situation market has been closed and we should wait until the situation stabilizes," he explained.

The Iraqi Prime Minister has stated in July that Iraq's commitments to pay its debts for the import of electricity and gas from Iran.

Iran had slashed gas supplies to Iraq in December last year over the due in payments. Soon after, the two countries reached an agreement over the disbursement of the outstanding debt. US sanctions have for several years prevented Iran from accessing its assets in several countries, including Iraq, with Tehran recently ramping up efforts to bring back its frozen funds.
