(Zaman) - Over 1,600 Americans fleeing from Lebanon have arrived at the southern Turkish port of Mersin aboard a US warship.

The 178-meter long US Navy vessel named 'Trenton' arrived in Mersin port at around noon on Monday, carrying a total of 1,612 US nationals who shortly afterwards disembarked, reports Trend.

The US Charge d'Affairs in Turkey Nancy McEldowney, the US Adana Consul General and other US officials were present at the port to welcome the passengers. Strict security measures were implemented in and around the port.

Buses to take the Americans to Adana were allowed to enter the port area with special permission, while other buses waiting to transfer other passengers were not allowed in.

The Americans were later transferred by a fleet of 30 buses to the US air base located in Incirlik in the neighboring Adana province.

The US citizens will rest at the base's huge hangars, before flying home on a special US aircraft allocated for the purpose.
