Mosque to be built in Athena

During the final session of the Cabinet of Ministers of Greece held under chair of the prime minister of the country Kostas Karamanlis, a decision was made on the construction of a mosque in the capital of the country.

With reference to the statement of the environmental minister of Greece Yorg Suflias, the Turkish media reports that the new mosque will be built in the centre of Athena, in the district of Votanikos.

At the moment, about 200 thousand Moslems live in Athena, special correspondent of Trend in Ankara reports. At present, no mosque functions in the city. The mosque Fatkhiya constructed in 1458 during the power of the Ottoman Empire is used as a museum.

Up to the recent period, Athena was only capital from the European countries where no Moslem mosque functions.
