Iran Materials 4 August 2006 16:44 (UTC +04:00)

The Foreign Ministry of Turkey addressed France via diplomatic channels for explanation on to-be-signed military cooperation agreement between France and Cyprus.

Turkish media report the agreement is signed in September 2006. It envisages use of airport in town of Baf by French Air Forces and deployment of French troops in the country.

Trends special correspondent in Turkey reports Turkish Foreign Ministry had underlined that such an agreement contradicts the current agreement В"Cyprus warrantiesВ" defining the island status and its signing will harm Turkish-French relationships.

In case Ankaras fears of future creation of French military base on Cyprus prove to be correct, a protest note will be dispatched to Paris. On this matter Turkey is going to talk with UK, another Cyprus guarantor, which already has a military base on the island.
