'We will Consider the Wish of Lebanese Groups' Before Deploying Troops' - Turkish Foreign Minister

(Zaman) - Concerning the likelihood of Turkey dispatching troops to Lebanon, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, in his meeting with Lebanese Parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri, said, We will only act according to the wishes of the Lebanese government, the Lebanese people and all groups of the Lebanese society.

In a press conference held following the meeting, Mr. Gul was asked whether Turkey would be in contact with Iran, Syria and Israel before deciding to take part in a UN-mandated international force to be sent to southern Lebanon. Gul responded by saying that Turkey has already been in contact with countries throughout the region during this period, and said:

We had very important talks with Syria and other countries in the region. We also talked to Israel, our talks with them and other countries in the region will continue. We only act according to the wishes of the Lebanese government, Lebanese people and all groups of the Lebanese society.

Gul meets Hariri and Seniora

Following the news conference, Gul met briefly with Saad Hariri, son of Lebanon's assassinated former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. In statement following this meeting, Gul stated that U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 is important and should be implemented.

Gul met with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Seniora and will later attend a dinner to be hosted by Seniora.

Gul will also hold talks with foreign ministers from different countries due in Beirut to attend the dinner program.
