(Zaman) - After the British government uncovered a suspected plot to bring down U.S.-bound airliners over the Atlantic, several Muslims living in Britain were added to a list of suspects.

In respond to the question how many Muslims living in Britain were monitored due to their direct or indirect link with terrorism, Scotland Yard's anti-terrorism chief Peter Clarke replied the numbers of people who they have to be interested in were into the thousands, reports Trend.

The police chief reported the number did not only include the attackers or terrorists but also the ones supporting or helping the probable attacks.

Clarke said the police had ascertained the people directly linked with terrorism; however, he gave no detailed information whether or not those people were captured.

Meanwhile, police said the 14 men held in Britains capital London on Friday night and early Saturday morning were arrested in a "pre-planned, intelligence-led operation."

Officials did not link the 14 arrests to earlier arrests of more than 20 people connected with an alleged plot by a group of British Muslims to blow up U.S.-bound airliners using liquid explosives, the statement said.
