(hurriyet) - With lightening speed, the Italian Foreign Ministry has moved to clear up any ambiguity surrounding statements made by Prime Minister Romano Prodi this week which were interpreted by Ankara to mean support from Rome for the so-called "Franco-German" alliance against Turkish EU membership, reports Trend.

Visiting Ankara yesterday, Italian Foreign Minister Deputy Famiano Crucianelli told Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul "Prodi was misunderstood, we give you a guarantee of full support."

Sources in Rome are busy clarifying Prodi's recent statements about Turkey, noting "There is no change in Italian policy on that subject."
