Finland to open new window for Turkey's EU bid

(Cihan) - Countries supporting Turkey in the European Union (EU) and the EU Commission have started an initiative to 'immediately open' eight chapters in Turkey's EU talks if one of the Turkish ports is opened to Greek Cyprus, Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros reported on Monday.

The fresh Finnish initiative is labeled as 'window formula.' Britain, Spain, Sweden and Italy have voiced their supports for the proposal, reports Trend.

If Turkey, says the formula, opens a port to Greek Cyprus in one or two years the negotiations will be resumed on the eight chapters, which were formerly suspended due Turkey's refusal to open its ports to traffic from EU member island state.

In addition, the cooperation between the EU Commission and Turkey on improvement of the opening criteria was adopted.

However, the Greek Cypriot government opposed the initiative as usual. It was also claimed that Tassos Papadopoulos was not informed about the initiative at all. The new drive in question is expected to be brought up again when the German rotating presidency starts in January 2007.
