(turkishdaily) - The problem of tobacco addiction, which is increasing across the globe at alarming rates, is forecast to affect 10 million young people in 2030.
Cigarette smoking has increased by 80 percent in the past two decades in Turkey where 12 people die because of tobacco related diseases every hour, reports Trend.
NevСЋehir's Provincial Health Department head Salim Aytekin in a statement on Monday said cigarette smoking was a major national health problem. Aytekin said recent research estimated that 1.25 billion people smoke in the world adding that one person died of a disease caused by cigarette smoking every 13 seconds.
Aytekin said although a trend of decreasing cigarette addiction could be observed in the developed world, the rate of cigarette smoking in Turkey had climbed by 80 percent in the last 20 years.
According to Health Ministry statistics, 300 people die of health conditions caused by cigarette smoking every day.
Aytekin said 40 percent of people in Turkey were addicted to cigarettes, where the age people start smoking was becoming younger. Aytekin said 17 percent of lung cancers were caused by passive smoking during childhood.
