(http://www.irna.ir/en) - Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos here Wednesday evening underscored the need to resolve the Iran nuclear issue through diplomacy.

During a meeting with an Iranian parliamentary delegation headed by Majlis Foreign Policy and National Security Commission Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi, he acknowledged the Islamic Republic of Iran's legal right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Describing the current atmosphere surrounding Iran 's nuclear case as "sensitive," he called for continued efforts to settle the dispute through negotiation.

He said Madrid was opposed to any confrontational approach to the Iran nuclear issue.

He praised Iran 's key role in Middle East developments, particularly in helping bring peace and stability to the region and the world as a whole.

With regard to Tehran-Madrid cooperation, he said he was satisfied with the current level of bilateral ties.

Boroujerdi, for his part, said exchange of delegations between the two countries has contributed to strengthening of ties.

Tehran is determined to boost ties with the EU member states, particularly with Spain , he declared.

He then briefed the Spanish foreign minister on Iran 's stances on regional problems, including the increased violence in Iraq , continuing standoff between parties in Lebanon and renewed insurgency in Afghanistan .

The Iranian parliamentarian voiced Tehran 's readiness to settle the nuclear issue through talks.

On Iran 's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the past few years, he said Tehran was ready to make its nuclear programs more transparent.

The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that calls for it to suspend enrichment activities have no legal or logical basis since international conventions, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), expressly grant countries, including Iran , the right to pursue nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, Boroujerdi said.

Boroujerdi, heading a parliamentary delegation, arrived in Madrid on Monday for a three-day visit to discuss the Iran nuclear issue with senior Spanish officials.
