Iran seeks to become world’s twelfth biggest steel producer

Iran's crude steel production will surpass 16 million metric tons by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20, 2015).

The Managing Director of Esfahan Mobarakeh Steel Company Bahram Sobhani said that Iran is currently the world's 15th biggest producer of steel, but once the underway projects come on stream, the country will become the world's number 12 producer, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported.

"Iran's steel production capacity is expected to reach 25 million metric tons in two years," he said.

"The costs in foreign country are being reduced each year, but in Iran the costs rise by 16 percent annually," he explained.

Sobhani went on to note than cheap steel imports from countries such as China, Russia, and Ukraine has worried domestic producers.

The public relations office of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) reported on September 27 that over 6.918 million metric tons of crude steel were produced in Iran in the five months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21 - August 22).

The figure shows 7.6 percent increase compared to the same period of time previous year, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on September 27.

Some 7.16 million metric tons of steel products were also produced in the country in the mention period.

The World Steel Association said in its latest press release that Iran produced 10.63 million metric tons of crude steel in the first eight months of 2014.

The figure shows 6.9 percent increase compared to the same period previous year, Iran's IRNA News Agency reported on September 24.

The country's crude steel output in August amounted to 1.332 million metric tons, which is 3.1 more than same month in 2013.

Iran was the world's 13th biggest producer of steel in August.

The world' total crude steel output in August was around 134.956 million metric tons, which is 1.4 percent more than the same month previous year.

Iran's crude steel production reached 15.421 million metric tons in 2013, which is 6.6 per cent more than its preceding year.

Iran was the world's 15th biggest producer of steel in 2013.

Iran plans to increase its annual steel output to 55 million metric tons by the end of the Fifth Five-Year Development Plan (2015).
