Half of Tehran province's power transmission and distribution facilities are over 25 years old, Seyed Mohammad Hashemi, the head of the Great Tehran Electrical Distribution Company said.
Hashemi said that the province loses a significant amount of electricity due to outdated facilities, more than it would have with the new ones.
"We need to reduce the loss to 7.8 percent," he said, adding that a 13-year plan has been devised in this regard.
Head of The Energy Commission of Iran's Parliament (Majlis) Ali Marvi said on October 27 that transmission and distribution losses amount to 15 percent in Iran.
"The global average is around 10 percent," he added, noting that the energy ministry needs to find solutions to reduce the figure, Iran's Fars News Agency reported.
Marvi also said that the energy ministry needs to double the country's production and transmission capacity every 9 years.
Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
The country's production capacity has surpassed 70,000 megawatt (263 billion Kwh).
Iran currently trades power with Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
