Iran annually allocates $1 billion from gas condensate exports to railway projects, Iranian MP Mehrdad Lahooti said.

Lahooti said the road network in Iran accounts for 90 percent of transportations and the rest is carried out by rail, sea, and air fleets, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Dec. 17.

Currently, 11,000 kilometers of railroad exist in the country and 5,000 kilometers are being built, he said, adding that based on national development plans, 1,000 kilometers of railroad should be built annually.

Over 20 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran's rail network in the first seven months of the current year(started on March 21).

The figure shows a 5.2 percent rise compared to the same period in the previous year.
